USED FOR HIGHBLOOD CHOLESTEROL
Astragalus Extract is used for highblood cholesterol by increasing contraction of the heart, especially if it is exhausted by fatigue or poison. Astragalus also has a hypotensive effect and has lowered blood pressure in animal studies. Its vasodilation effect of dilating blood vessels improves blood circulation of the skin. Astragalus has an antibacterial effect, especially upon shigella dysenteriae, streptococcus haemolyticus, diplococcus pneumonia, and staphylococcus aureus. Astragalus is a blood tonic which regulates fluid metabolism, water retention, and bloating. It is an excellent regulatory tonic to the sugar metabolizing functions, especially if combined with licorice.
RESTORES IMMUNE FUNCTIONS
In a publication of the American Cancer Society a report stated that the aqueous extract of astragalus membranaceus restored the immune functions in 90% of the cancer patients studied. The article stated that cellular immune response is impaired in cancer patients and compromised by radiation and chemotherapy. They found astragalus was a "response modifier" favorably modulating the subnormal immune apparatus.
Researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center found that the astragalus extract enhanced the cell-destroying ability (cytotoxicity) of a conventional immunotherapy treatment (interleukin-2) by improving the immune response and partially restored immune function of cells in test tubes. Astragalus has also been found to stimulate the production of interferons (a group of substances produced by the body as part of the normal defense mechanism against viral infections) and reduce the length of colds.
PROMOTES ADRENAL CORTICAL FUNCTION
Another study on 572 patients found that astragalus promoted adrenal cortical function, and it ameliorated bone marrow depression and gastrointestinal toxicity by radiation and chemotherapy. Dr. Bruce Halstead, MD, with the World Health Organization also stated that astragalus is used for all forms of radiation caused by the effects of ozone.
RESISTS INFECTIOUS VIRUSES
Chinese researchers found that astragalus enabled mice to resist infectious viruses and produced interferon. Interferon is a vital cellular protein that inhibits viral growth and is believed to be effective against virus-related cancers as it reduces the "T suppressor cells" which inhibit one's immunity. The elderly are more susceptible to immune problems due to high "T suppressor cells."
