As we grow older blood circulation decreases to our eyes, reducing the amount of crucial antioxidants found in our eye's cells. Without the optimal level of antioxidants, our eyes' capacity to fight free radicals is diminished by the sun and other forms of environmental stress. Medical studies have proven the effectiveness of antioxidant supplements in fighting against age-related eye disorders, such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

Lutein is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family, a group of naturally occurring fat-soluble pigments found in plants. Lutein is the primary carotenoid present in the central area of the retina called the macula. Lutein may act as a filter to protect the macula from potentially damaging forms of light. Consequently, lutein appears to be associated with protection from age-related macular degeneration. Degeneration of the macula retinae is the leading cause of blindness in elderly Americans.

Studies show that adults with the highest intake of lutein had a 57% decreased risk of macular degeneration compared with those people with the lowest intake. Of the carotenoids, lutein is most strongly associated with this protection. In a preliminary study, a similar link was suggested between low levels of lutein and increased risk of cataracts.

Carnosine is a small molecule composed of the amino acids histidine and alanine. Several studies have demonstrated that it possesses strong and specific antioxidant properties, protects against radiation damage, and promotes wound healing. Carnosine has been suggested to be the water-soluble counterpart to Vitamin E in protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage.

Vitamin A is essential for the health and function of epithelial cells. Vitamin A deficiency in the eye can cause an abnormal tear film, leading to severe dry eyes and more discomfort for contact lens wearers.

Vitamin E is used to increase the life span of cornea and sclera cells, decrease inflammation, speed up healing of eye tissues, and regenerate glutathione in the eye.

Zinc is required for two important enzymes in the retina that are needed for vision. In a double-blind trial, supplementation with zinc for one to two years significantly reduced the rate of visual loss in people with macular degeneration.
